The US and Iran in the Trump Era – Back to the War Path?
A lecture with the 2016 Alumnus of the Year – Trita Parsi
The US and Iran has a long history of an ambivalent relationship. Their governments have treated each other as enemies up until recently, when Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani held a phone call with President Barack Obama the year of 2013. This was the first conversation between US and Iranian heads of state for 30 years. Since that time, the groundwork was laid to what would become the Iran Nuclear Agreement; one of Obama’s greatest diplomatic achievements. Iran and a group of six nations led by the United States reached a historic accord 2015, an agreement to significantly limit Tehran’s nuclear ability in return for lifting international oil and financial sanctions.
But with President Trump threatening to tear up the nuclear deal, what will happen now? What action will Iran take? How will developments between the two countries and in the Middle East play out?
Trita Parsi, world leading expert on US-Iranian relations and the advisor for the Obama administration during the Iran-Agreement, is now coming to Uppsala to give a talk about the current situation between the U.S. and Iran and to receive the 2016 Alumnus of the Year Prize at Uppsala University.
Parsi is the founder and president of the National Iranian American Council (NIAC) an expert on US-Iranian relations, Iranian foreign politics, and the geopolitics of the Middle East. Parsi has followed Middle East politics through work in the field and he is frequently consulted by Western and Asian governments on foreign policy matters. He has also worked for the Swedish Permanent Mission to the UN.
Trita Parsi started his academic studies with a Master’s degree in International relations at Uppsala University. This was followed by another Master’s degree in economics at Stockholm School of Economics. He received his PhD in international relations at the John Hopkins University in the US.
