18 December – The Catalan Referendum

Is Catalonia becoming an independent state?
The question on Catalan secession from Spain and national independence for Catalonia has triggered arguably the worst constitutional crisis for Spanish democracy. Why do so many Catalans support claims for independence? Why do the Spanish government refuse to negotiate a legal referendum on independence? What role does the EU play in the Catalan crisis? This lecture seeks to place the question on Catalan independence in a historical context as well as to address current political developments in Spain. The lecture also provides a comparative and European perspective on the matter.
