January 16th
On the first day we visited the European Parliament in the morning. First we went on a Hemicycle talk where the guide talked about the work and the role of the European Parliament, answered our questions and showed us around the house. The Hemicycle is the room where the Members of the European Parliament gather during plenary sessions to hold debates and vote on issues.
Then we met Alexander Muskus, Political Advisor to MEP Tomas Tobé and Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Development (DEVE). We discussed a lot about the war in Ukraine and the European Union’s partnership with Africa.
In the afternoon we visited the EuroMed Rights, which is a network of human rights organisations in many countries in the Euro-Mediterranean region. We talked and listened to Vincent Forest, Outreach Director and Elena Bizzi Migration & Asylum Programme Coordinator, especially about migration and asylum rights.
Before dinner, we had some free-time as several of us walked around town. We went to Grand Place to take some photos and then, of course, buy Belgian waffles, chocolate and fries. The day ended with a typical Belgian dinner at a restaurant.
