For this lecture, former UN legal counsel and ambassador Hans Corell will speak on the fundamental provisions in the UN Charter and from an international legal point of view focus on the extensive sanctions against Russia; actions taken by the UN General Assembly; a ruling by the International Court of Justice and the fact that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has started preliminary investigations. Since the ICC does not have jurisdiction over the crime of aggression in the present case, Corell will be addressing the question of whether a special criminal court may be established with such jurisdiction. Last but not least Corell will emphasize the need for reforming the UN Security Council with a particular attention on the need for the rule of law as a precondition for international peace and security.
