In honor of the International woman day, Anna-Carin Hall from Kvinna till Kvinna will hold a lecture about sexual violence in war.
Anna-Carin is the press officer of Kvinna till Kvinna. Kvinna till Kvinna is a Swedish women’s rights organisation formed in 1993 as a spontaneous response to the massive rapes occurring in the Balkan Wars. Today they support 150 partner organisations in more than 20 conflict affected countries around the world.
The same horrifying sexual violence as the ones during the Balkan wars can be seen today in Ukraine. The reports are dreadful: 4-year-old girls have been forced to perform oral sex on Russian soldiers and mothers have been raped in front of their families.
But these disturbing stories are far from unknown. UN estimate that up to 60,000 women were raped in the conflict in former Yugoslavia (1992-1995) and at least 200,000 in the protracted conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 1998. Despite several UN Security Council resolutions over the course of two decades, addressing the so-called Women, Peace and Security Agenda, these atrocities still occur on a regular basis.
Is rape in war something inevitable? What do we know about the mechanisms behind? How can we work on a local, regional, and international level to mitigate or hopefully stop these war crimes from affecting women, girls and the entire society with a lifelong trauma and stigma?
These question will be raised and discussed during our lecture on the International Woman’s day.
We hope to see you there. Let us know you will attend – at the Facebook event
This lecture will be held in English.
