“Why Robots?” is a lecture given by the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (SPAS) that explores what autonomous weapons systems (AKA killer robots) are, the risks they present, and the work SPAS is doing to ban them. The lecture will discuss arguments on banning autonomous weapons from the perspectives of international law, ethics and security policy and provide an analysis of the issue from a gender and race perspective.
About SPAS
The Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society is a civil society organisation that works with disarmament and security with the goal of sustainable peace. Since our inception in 1883, we have worked to be a counterweight to militarism. We want to show that there is a different perspective on security than that which prioritises the state and the military. Instead, we focus on human security, which values not only negative peace, i.e. the absence of war, but also positive peace, which includes factors such as health security, food security and well-being. We also believe in peaceful solutions to conflicts such as dialogue and mediation
