Debate Society

At UF Uppsala, we host weekly debates on a variety of topics, ranging from geopolitics and economics to culture, sustainability, and more. These debates offer a space to engage with different perspectives, practice critical thinking, and refine public speaking skills.

Whether you’re presenting or participating as an audience member, you’ll have the opportunity to learn and connect with others. After the debate, we gather to socialize in a relaxed atmosphere.

Our debates are open to all members. There is no need to pre-register—simply stop by to join the discussion or listen. To stay updated.

The debates normally take place on Thursdays 18:30 – 20:00.

Become a Debate Trustee

The Uppsala Association of International Affairs is looking for Debate Trustees to join our team at the start of each operational year (around August/September). As a trustee, you’ll collaborate with the Heads of Activity to organize debates, select topics, and moderate discussions. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to our weekly debates and engage with a variety of ideas.

Being a Debate Trustee requires creativity, commitment, and the ability to work with others. If you enjoy discussing a wide range of topics and helping organize events, you may be a great fit for the role.

We are looking for team members who:

Are reliable and committed to attending meetings and practices
Have basic Excel skills or are willing to learn
Enjoy working with people and thrive in a team environment

Joining the Debate Team is a chance to develop your skills in organizing and speaking, while contributing to a community that values diverse perspectives. If you’re interested in helping to create meaningful debates for our members, we’d be glad to have you as part of our team.

Are you the next Head of Debate?

The operational year at UF Uppsala begins on July 1st.

Each spring (April–May), applications for positions open through our website and social media channels. If your profile matches a role you’ve applied for, you’ll be invited for an interview. The Election Committee will then review candidates and nominate individuals for each position.

The final decision is made at the Spring Annual Meeting, where UF Uppsala members vote to elect the new board. Most roles include a seat on the board, giving you voting rights and a key role in shaping the association. Board members are expected to attend monthly meetings throughout the year.

Profile for a Head of Debate

As Head of the Debate Group at UF Uppsala, you will be responsible for organizing and leading weekly debate meetings. Debate is an excellent way to develop critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and the ability to understand different perspectives. These skills are valuable not only as a student but also in the workplace, personal life, and as a participant in a democratic society.

In this role, you will create a supportive and stimulating environment where members can practice their rhetorical skills and engage in meaningful discussions. The group meets once a week, so you should be able to dedicate at least one evening a week to the role. Passion, organization, and strong communication skills are essential, as well as a willingness to engage with people from diverse backgrounds.

If you enjoy public speaking, facilitating discussions, and leading a group, this could be a great opportunity for you. We are looking for someone who is open-minded and eager to foster a welcoming space for all participants.
